What are native plants?

Native plants are plants that naturally occur in a region in which they evolved. In the Americas they can be defined as a plant that occured in a region before the arrival of European settlers. Native plants include grasses, ferns, perennial & annual flowering plants, trees, shrubs, and vines. They are adapted to their local soil and climate conditions and are the ecological basis on which life functions and depends. Our native wildlife evolved along with these plants in a specific region and they need each other to survive, thrive, and support biodiversity.
